There’s a reason why over 170 NCAA D1 programs, 2 former College World Series Champs and 21 MLB teams trust using it.
And that’s my goal for you.
But I get it… The Core Velocity Belt is expensive.
Coming from a single family, I understand that it’s not always feasible to shell out over $300 for a Core Velocity Belt. Especially with the associated costs of lessons and hotel stays.
But, there’s a reason its expensive.
It’s not just The Belt you’re paying for, it’s the security of knowing with 100% certainty…
And although there’s other products attempting to train the hips by attaching at the waist, there’s only one original product which has gained wide spread popularity and often, so widely known that it’s often referred to as only “The Belt’.
And that my friends is The Core Velocity Belt.
Now that you have a very basic understanding of what The Core Velocity Belt is all about, I want to provide you with some much, much cheaper alternatives and then by the end of this post you’ll have a deeper understanding of how to avoid waisting valuable training time, you’ll never get back.
*Disclaimer: This is not a paid endorsement for either product listed below.
**Regardless of which product you choose, without proper instruction you will not benefit, in fact it could be deemed harmful or dangerous. Buyer’s bewared.
So, here’s the first of two cheaper WAIST BELT alternatives you’ll see advertised as a similar product to the original Core Velocity Belt Training System.
We’d waited all week for the day Saturday morning would come. Back then it seemed like a week lasted ten days, not seven. Especially the week of a big game.
Finally, the morning arrived.
We hopped on our Huffy ten-speeds and headed to the neighborhood across the street. Oh yeah, you didn’t know?
Back in the old days, travel ball was played between neighborhoods.
And participation trophies came in the form of Mom allowing you to ride your bike 3 miles to a game played in the backyard. Baseballs were a bonus.
But it wasn’t a big deal. A tennis ball would work too. And a whiffle ball. Or maybe even a softball. And if you didn’t have any of those, you’d just grab a roll of tape and shape into a circle. Baseball’s were usually a surprise bonus.
And pitching lessons?
It’s different. It’s a new generation.
The days of fighting your brother in the morning for “who gets to read the back of the cereal box” are gone.
Every kid nowadays has an iPhone or iPad. Kids are different because we as parents and coaches give them no choice but to be different. These days people FEEL like they don’t have to put in the time, especially with the copy and paste function seen on most computers these days. Years worth of work is available at the click of a button.
But, the issue so many coaches, parents and teachers miss is…. There’s a crucial difference between knowing and understanding..
And these are the lessons I’ve learned from 12 years of obsessive research and development pertaining to The Core Velocity Belt.
Since I began coaching baseball as a college coach back in 2004…
I grew up in a single parent home with my brother. We were taught from an early age that if you put your name to it, it mattered.
And to this day, I preach that to my kids.
Just like last week when my middle daughter bragged of copying off another kids paper so she could get to recess earlier. I jerked her up, yes we still whip our kids, and told her…
Sure, you can look over someone’s shoulder and see that 4+4=8, you know that. But there will be a day when you’re going to be asked how you arrived at that answer, and you’re not going to know because you never took the time to truly understand the steps to getting there.
What I’m really trying to tell you is this…
She looks at me and clearly gets it… Dad, will we get a trophy after the game this week?
Geez, you went 1-8 baby. Quit worrying about a participation trophy right now and focus on what’s important. The last thing you want is a reputation for being the slow kid at recess carrying around a participation trophy.
We’ve already got an entire country of people like that, you’re better than that!
Luckily she’s 8, she’s still got a chance.
But my point is…
I believe in old school traditions when it comes to country, competition, community and faith.
But today’s kid or baseball player doesn’t understand that…
Why would they?
Because I know from experiences. I’ve seen it.
However, I’ve learn from my experiences and move on.
Well, you’re going to be vulnerable to mistakes and the experts found on every single corner and really, that’s what this message is really about today.
We both know how this whole baseball instruction thing works.
But, we never stop to think about that…
No doubt, the problems and frustrations our kids are facing today in the world of travel ball and instruction is driven by the almighty dollar. And that’s sad because the only one’s really hurting are the kids. Especially when you’ve got so-called experts walking around with their hands out.
Think about this…
I could keep going, but you get the point. Right?
I realized this some 12 years ago when my oldest daughter accidentally discovered what would later become the training tool that re-shaped the thoughts of pitching mechanics and rocked the foundation of modern pitching instruction.
And to think that a product used by the games biggest starts and the teams with most widely recognized reputations….
A little girl bored to death and doing what little girls do when they’re stranded in an empty basketball gym waiting for Dad. She was only attempting to entertain herself while her old man finished up pitching lessons.
And since that day, I’ve done everything in my power to bring the game back to the players….
Because I realize the first step in player development starts:
As years passed I dug into research to find more effective ways to communicate with my pitchers and one of the most interesting studies I found read like this:
Based on research form Purdue University…
So, I began testing each pitchers method of learning inside my camps in hopes of shortening the communication gap. Since that time we’ve compiled over 1350 subjects.
And you want to know what we’ve found?
And the numbers we’ve tested prove that.
Here’s the test data we’ve compiled over the past 5 years and 1351 testing subjects from the ages of 10-27 years of age.
Are you starting to see where I’m going with this?
Anytime the human body is given instructions on what to do..
One that which makes Obama Care look like the. Savior to America’s Health Care Crisis but we both know that’s not true.
Yet, we continue to sign our kids up for lessons, over and over, day after day putting them in a position to fail, a game they have no chance for winning.
I realized this after studying the teachings of Paul Nyman’s work. I became obsessed.
And before you know it, I’d gathered enough information to feel comfortable releasing my first system for teaching new age science using an old-school approach. And I called it the Pitching Mechanics MasterMind System.
Because I’ve learned…
I wanted to reward kids for working hard and doing it on their own. Get away from all the others out there that were doing more harm than good, out to make a dollar, turning pitchers into pitching mech-addicts, forcing them to become dependent upon hour long lessons, not having any idea what to adjust on their own.
And that’s why I created that system. It was coaching genocide.
And it caught on..
Suddenly you started to see the concept of FEEL used every where and it was awesome. However, the only place you saw it all caps under each email and inside every post was BaseballThinkTank.
It caught on quickly and I was so excited that I could contribute to making some kid or parents world better. But this is baseball instruction. A modern day Gold Rush where old school values are Trumped by the almighty dollar.
So I started getting paranoid that others were trying to steal my material to market their products. So, I reached out to two in specific. Just so happens they’re partners, but that was a coincidence I’m sure.
S0, me being me..
I reached out to them and posted my opinion on social media. And the next thing I know I’m getting letters from his lawyer????
I was told this gentleman had been using it for years and they were right…
Where was I?
You yell Hot!
Time’s running out.
And as soon as your’e about to give up, one of your students places his hand on the metal heating vent and yells what you believe to be a 4-letter word in his native language.
So, you gather up all 5 students and say, “Hot” while placing each of their hands to the heating vent.
Now they know.
Now, no matter what they call it in their foreign tongue, they understand the definition of Hot. You’ve done your job. You don’t have to worry about talking so much where the player gets confused.
Below is another coincidence of using the word FEEL in all caps but I don’t have it copyrighted and in no way am I suggesting they are following what I do, why would they?
Because I realize…
But I also knew the value of hard work.
I witnessed from a front row seat that the greatest players had a burning desire to compete. Unlike so many who found it easy to compete in a crowded room where you knew you’d get the praise and attention from coaches, these guys took it a step further. They didn’t rely on others to get the job done for them, they did it themselves.
It was my job to get out of the way and let these players flourish, find ways to spotlight their natural abilities.
Great players competed in Empty Rooms, dark corners of development where they were willing to sweat and bleed without recognition of any kind.
But, honestly I would have never figured any of this out…
In case you didn’t know I discovered The Core Velocity Belt by accident. Actually my 6 year old daughter did after slamming into a concrete wall. Little did I know at the time, but that accident would do more to my head, than hers.
Because over the next 12 years, I found myself digging around searching for answers to the device which would later become famously known as The Core Velocity Belt.
I found myself constantly falling in and digging out of rabbit holes, spending 10’s of 1000’s of hours researching and reaching out to anyone and everyone.
But it wasn’t until I started dabbling into the Central Nervous System that I actually started to transforming my mind and started to view the body as a dynamic system where everything affects everything.
Looking back on those hours spent dabbling and testing what was then a Waist Support Belt belt, I started to see things I’d never seen before. Both good and bad. I knew was onto something but I didn’t understand what it was.
Like so many of you who see today’s Core Velocity Belt, I mistakenly identified the device as an over-speed device, but soon realized the human body is hard-wired to protect itself and will go to great lengths to protect itself at all costs.
I soon realized you had to convince your body it was OK to move faster,(Remember this) because it’s hand was never to far from the brake!
I wrote about that inside the Original Core Velocity Program and again in 2.0 and most recently 3.0… (Letting you know the body won’t move fast until it feels OK to move fast.)
And one of the…
The human body…
So, being I’m a KY public educated school graduate, I had to come up with a way to explain it to myself where it made sense.
A method which would allow me to not only understand but would also allow me to speak in terms my students and pitchers could understand. And that’s what I did.
And there was a whole list of terms, but that’s not important right now.
And once you do, you’ll understand why:
It’s why I’ve told you time and time again…
But, how does The Core Velocity Belt do all these things I’m talking about?
But since the beginning of my self-education, I’ve relied on guys much smarter than me and that’s why I’ll let the NFL’s Chief Medical Director explain what’s really going on with The Core Velocity Belt.
But, it took me over 12 years to refine and develop The Core Velocity Belt in order to make this happen.
The Core Velocity Belt…
And last but not least…
According to Wiki and other scientific reference guides…
I don’t want to waist your time any longer, lets talk about the center mass now.
The center mass serves several different functions pertaining to human movement, all of which is required inside the sport of baseball, if you’re ever to be labeled mechanically correct.
And I can say with certain there’s two major obstacles preventing so many players from reaching their ultimate potential in this game and those two factors are:
Both share the common denominator between the lack of both an internal and external understanding. Like I said earlier, today’s pitcher is looong on information and short on communication.
And there’s 100’s of factors to blame…
Let it be known….
And that’s where The Core Velocity Belt has impacted the game of baseball the most.
But, to be honest, I would have never known any of this and probably not even met Dr. Sills had it not been for my years and years of research on pitching mechanics and the human body.
The Core Velocity Belt really transformed my thought process and made me re-think everything I thought I knew, read and ever heard about pitching mechanics.
In the beginning I believed everything I heard because I didn’t know enough to question what I was hearing or seeing. I knew I was onto something early but it wasn’t ready to be released, I had to learn more!
Here, watch this video…
“”How to” Pitching Mechanics – Hip and Shoulder Separation” . (The Core Velocity Belt does not endorse this video as “How To” teach hip/shoulder separation… We view this as (“How Not To Ever Teach Separation This Way)
Either way we’ll discuss some key points…
- “What this works on is the muscles in our lower half, how to engage them properly, how to correct movement errors intuitively with the athletes because not a lot of coaching will get done. So what this will help us do is build good muscle memory.”
“We don’t want to over-coach this. We don’t want to talk a lot when our athletes are doing this drill, or if your doing this drill for yourself, don’t think too much. Coaches definitely don’t talk. We want to eliminate that.”
There’s an argument for quality over quantity, but we want to take a lot of reps, but we want them to be good rep. We don’t want to take a lot of bad reps. Again, that’s grooming bad muscle memory. We want to take a lot of quality reps. Again, if we take less reps, but they’re good reps, they’re quality reps, that’s gonna be more beneficial than taking more reps that are bad reps.
And one of my favorite comments was…
“You’ve got to let the body know it’s ok to move that fast.”
But by far my favorite part of his speech was…..
Now the in the box, in the game, we don’t want to think about our mechanics any more. We want to trust our hands, trust our body, trust our mechanics, just see the ball, and hit the ball. Again, practice time working on a drill, working in batting practice, that’s the time to work on mechanics, build our mechanics, build that muscle memory. When we get in the game, we just got to know it.
I realize you’re not supposed to do this but I can’t help myself…I’m going to steal this original concept.
Now, don’t get me wrong… I don’t think these guys copied my info… It’s a coincidence.
Just the other day I was asked…
So, let’s recap the differences:
So, to see it for yourself one more time…
Here’s the two again:
The Core Velocity Belt:
So if you ask me…
I’m going to tell you…
Really at the end of the day, it’s the information and instruction that has led to:
Oh, and one more thing…
Trust what you FEEL!
P.S: Prior to writing this article I had reached out to PowerCore to ask they stop using FEEL in all caps and before you know it I got a letter from their attorney demanding I take down my thoughts from Social media. They have been using the word for years, so I want everyone to know that this article is not a paid endorsement by that company.
And that everything you just read, and the many, many similar thoughts and concepts of FEEL are 100% total coincidence.
BTW – If you’ve tried other products and are not seeing results or maybe you’re ready to learn how to actually pitch and train from a game mound where you will FEEL results transfer, or maybe you’re tired of training from a seated position, chair or from the bench.
