I was reminded of this last night when I had a private client call me and tell me what his pitching coach had been working on, with him.
And wouldn’t you know it?
…30 minutes later, my phone rings and it was a AAA pitcher, listed among MLB’s top prospects… Asks the exact same question.
Tough to believe coaches are actually teaching something so ridiculously wrong.
But -It’s happening.
And it’s happening everywhere, at every level.
Time and time again, pitchers are totally wasting their time, effort and money working on the wrong thing….
You know what the bad part about all this, is?
Pitchers are getting pretty good at doing the ‘wrong’ things RIGHT. Sucks, knowing how many young pitchers will either be forced to ‘start back over’ or just end up hanging em’ up.
I got so fired up writing those last few freaking lines, that I realized I haven’t even told you what I’m even talking about, have I?
Nope. Just checked. I didn’t did I.
Here you go. I’ll list several hot ‘teachings’ and you pick which one I’ve been rambling about these past few minutes.
1. Longtoss increases velocity.
2. Hip/shoulder separation increases velocity.
3. Getting extension ‘out front’ helps you keep the ball low in the zone.
4. Pitchers should wait to learn how to throw the curveball because it hurts your arm.
Based on the dozen or so email replys already, it’s pretty even.
That’s why you’ll probably be shocked when I tell ya……
All of those listed above are blatantly false.
In fact – I’m not even talking about any of those you just read.
Here’s the ‘one’ thing both the Dad and MLB top prospect had been working tirelessly to create.
A longer stride.
They have been taught, told and preached too, how….
A longer stride increases your velocity.
That one makes me cringe just repeating. Here’s why. –
First, pitchers who focus on gaining a few inches in stride length, most often, end up pushing the ball.
– Second, pitchers that focus on striding further, end up throwing with all arm.
– Third – it’s forcing the pitcher to waste valuable training time on the ‘product’ versus the ‘goal’ In short –
A lot of what you see and hear related to ‘elite’ pitchers’ velocity, command, performance etc… is merely a product of something else happening inside the delivery. (I’ll be talking a lot more about this later.)
In fact –
I’ll spend an entire 8 -10 hours spilling my guts on February 27 and 28th at The BaseballThinkTank Certification Course.
This is an intensive, two-day event with continued education.
It’s designed for any coach, or instructor, looking to take their knowledge of pitching and performance to another level, while tapping into my network of friends and contacts.
No question, it’s one of favorite events of the year because I hold nothing back and within an hour or two, everyone in the room is dropping knowledge bombs (Lando) and we all leave the place two days later…
Better, more qualified pitching coach, armed with new ideas, a firm grip on how to plugin your philosophy with my easy as pie, teaching system.
And most of the coaches tell me they loved knowing they gained twice the number of “pitching guys” inside their network over a 48 hour period, than they had in their last 48 months combined.
Of those that actually past the certification test, their names and contact info will be featured inside the new site structure that will be released in the next month.
It will begin at 6 on Saturday the 27th and back at it Sunday morning at 8.
Don’t plan on getting much sleep and there’s a chance you might fail the test, if you’re not ready to have your mind expanded.
Go ahead and register today and let’s be ready to get after it here in just over a week from now.
Talking about fun, these Certification Events are freaking awesome.
Trust what you FEEL!
